The most recent 72-hour storm totals from the NWS, published at 9 p.m. Sunday, showed more than 6 inches of rain at the peak of Mount Diablo in Contra Costa County, and nearly 2 inches in Berkeley.
The Bay Area’s heaviest rain came in Napa, Sonoma and Marin counties. The 11.71 inches of rain that fell in Kentfield over a four-day period exceeded the city’s total rainfall in 2013.
Some areas of Santa Clara County recorded more than 3 inches, but only 1.49 inches fell on Mount Hamilton and only 0.21 at Mineta San Jose International Airport.
In San Francisco, 2.31 inches of rain fell, causing slick roads and creating a problem on the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge, where officials worked to repair a leak that left rainwater dripping into the steel structure beneath the road deck on the suspension stretch of the bridge section.
Such a problem, if left untended, could lead to corrosion inside the steel bridge, but Bay Bridge spokesman Andrew Gordon said the agency anticipated the problem.
“We’re trying to get a sense of where the water is coming in, and whatever the problem is, we will fix it,” Gordon said. “There is, and absolutely never was, any danger to the public.”
In the Sierra, the storm more than 2.5 feet of snow at the Sierra-at-Tahoe ski resort and 27 inches at the peak of Sugar Bowl. The top of Kirkwood received 22 inches, with 16 inches at its base, according to the weather service. However, “normal” is 6 feet of snow in one storm.
The rain brought some hassles to airport travelers. A San Francisco International Airport official said 60 flights departing and 60 flights landing were canceled through 8:30 p.m. Sunday, and that flights were running 30 to 90 minutes behind schedule.

As most people know, California is going through one of the worst droughts in it’s history. 2013 was the driest weather in California in the last 400 years! Many of the world’s religions have special supplications (“Duas” in arabic) and prayers for rain. In fact many Christian Churches across California as well as many of the Western States of the United States have been asking their congregations to pray and fast in hopes that God will give us much needed rain. In religion of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad (S) also taught the Muslims a specific prayer to ask Allah (“God” in english) for rain. In Arabic it’s called “Salatul Istisqa.” On February 1st, 2014 the American Muslim community of the San Francisco Bay Area organized one of the largest prayers for rain at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, CA. Over 1,000 people participated. It was a bright and sunny day with no clouds in the sky. (You can see some nice pics of the event from the SJ Mercury News.) The next day (Sunday Feb 2nd, 2014), not only did it rain, but it was the largest rainfall in California in 2014 (up to that point)! Since we are living in a “Modern” and “Secular” world, where Science is King, there were many skeptics and unfortunately several “Muslims” also asked if the rain prayer was planned on a date when rain was already in the forecast. I was not one of the organizers of the event (although I did assist with Media Relations before and during the event), I know that the event was planned several weeks in advance when there was no rain in the forecast. Here are some facts about the Rain Prayer event: 1. Imam Tahir Anwar, one of the main organizers of the event, stated to me that the rain prayer was planned during the Grand Mawlid (Celebration of the Prophet Muhammad (S)’s birthday) event at the Santa Clara Marriott on Jan 18th, 2014. 2. They wanted to hold the rain prayer within one week of the Mawlid, but due to a scheduling conflict for Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, they selected the date of Sat Feb 1st to hold the prayer service. 3. They began advertising the event on January 25th, 2014. At that time there was no rain in the forecast and in fact according to Almanac.com, the forecast for the Bay Area weekend of Feb 1st – 3rd was “sunny and mild“! Now, for those people who claim the date of Feb 1st was selected because rain was in the forecast that weekend, they are clearly incorrect. But here is some additional facts about Muslims praying for rain BEFORE the scheduled Feb 1st event: 1. During the night of the Grand Mawlid (Jan 18th, 2014) a pamphlet which contained a long Dua (supplication) for rain was passed out to all the attendees (over 1,000 people) at the event and this special prayer for rain was recited at the closing of the program.

2. On Jan 11th, 2014 a group of 100 Muslims in Folsom, CA gathered near Folsom Lake and performed the rain prayer as well. Within 5 minutes of starting the prayer it began to sprinkle rain (See Video Clip here)! So who says that these two incidents are not the reason why it started to rain more within the following weeks? Even though it rained heavily in the Bay Area the day after the larger prayer for rain in Pleasanton on Feb 2nd (see the article in the Contra Costa Times), we as believing Muslims do not know which prayer was accepted or whose specific prayer that God answered. At the Alameda County Fairgrounds there were several non-Muslims who also attended and joined in the prayer for rain – including a man with a dog, who also was sitting in the last row of the men’s prayer lines. So perhaps God accepted the dog’s prayer? All joking aside, in our Dua (supplication), we ask God to give water to the plants and animals and ask God not to punish them as well as the innocent children for our sins.

Now one week later (Feb 8th, 2014), California is having it’s largest rain fall in almost 4 years from a long and concentrated tropical storm from the Pacific sometimes called a “Pineapple Express” where one storm can carry 15 times as much water as the Mississippi River! Of course, we are still a long ways from recovering from the drought in California, but every little bit of rain helps. So even if you don’t consider yourself a “religious” person, it doesn’t hurt to pray. After seeing me on the local news talking about the Rain Prayer (you can see the clip here), a former co-worker of mine (who is Non-Religious and Not a Muslim) texted me: “[The Rain Prayer] Worked Already! Global warming lurks behind ‘polar vortex’ facade

The polar vortex dumped cold temperatures with more snow on the Midwest.
“Game of Thrones” fans recognize the motto “winter is coming” as the warning for impending doom. Well, winter is here and Chicagoans enduring the polar vortex know stepping outside means running the risk of turning into a Popsicle.
So where is global warming?
President Obama confirmed climate change as fact in his State of the Union address last Tuesday, but those of us facing subzero temperatures may feel skeptical about the existence of global warming, missing the big picture.
“I could use some global warming right now,” I told myself, wearing enough layers to resemble a Russian nesting doll and waddling in sync with morning commuters like an ice cube tray moving down Clark Street.
Yet, like that tattoo you instantly regretted getting on your 18th birthday, climate change hasn’t gone away — it’s just covered up.
“The concern with climate change is focused on global temperatures, but the big changes that we potentially see are in the weather systems,” said Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel. “More storms, more tornadoes, more hurricanes have a bigger impact on us than just getting warmer. The polar vortex is an example of that.”
Warmer ocean temperatures in the Arctic are pushing out the frigid air, causing drunken jet streams to wander places it shouldn’t, resulting in the latest arctic blast plaguing Chicago.
“This winter is unusual in the respect that we’re not behaving like other parts of the United States,” Angel said. “We’re seeing long stretches without a whole lot of warm weather.
The more we experience snowy weather, the likelier it is we won’t accept global warming as reality, according to a 2013 University of Michigan survey that reported a 13 percent increase in the number of Americans who justify their disbelief by looking out their frosty windows.
While it is tempting to point to my frozen toes as contrary evidence, the majority of Americans — 63 percent — accept global warming as a reality that is driven by human use of fossil fuels. And that’s only a 4 percentage point drop from last winter’s results reported by the University of Michigan for the National Surveys on Energy and Environment as the highest number — 67 percent — since 2008.
“For those outliers who don’t accept it, changing their views based on one season is not the best use of evidence,” said survey co-author Chris Borick. “There are people who might say ‘Hey look, I’m seeing it,’ or ‘I’m not seeing it’ but this is a long-term phenomena. Each year depending on the winter severity there appears to be a significant relationship to overall levels of acceptance.”
If patterns hold, current extreme temperatures will drive down acceptance levels further, according to Borick, director of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion.
“The person in the polar vortex isn’t thinking about how, at the same time, there are droughts in California and record high temperatures in Australia,” Borick said.
Hundreds of leading scientists documented changes in the climate system — and severe consequences to come — in last fall’s release of the fifth assessment report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), concluding:
“Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, sea level has risen and the concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased,” according to the IPCC report.
A toastier globe teases a false sense of a favorable alternative during this chilly season.
However, the Earth’s temperature is a balancing act. As more greenhouse gases are trapped in the atmosphere, the more the planet struggles to juggle the extra junk, such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, which have reached levels unheard-of in last 800,000 years, according to the IPCC report.
The failed balance reveals itself in coastal flooding, drier droughts limiting agriculture, biodiversity loss, acidic oceans, as well as a greater severity of storms and heat waves. All of these changes affect the quality of human life.
Something seems terribly wrong when 25-degree weather feels balmy. The temptation to reject climate change is shortsighted and stalls the solutions needed to undertake President Obama’s call for “a safer, more stable world.”
