Private Sector: China’s debt has swelled to more than 2 1/2 times the size of its economy, a sign Beijing will face difficulties as it seeks to expand, triggering to a financial crisis.
The world’s second-largest economy in June reached a total debt-to-gross domestic product ratio of 251 percent, up from 147 percent at the end of 2008, Standard Chartered Bank estimates.
The United States had a total debt-to-GDP ratio of about 260 percent by the end of last year, and Britain’s ratio was about 277 percent. Japan has the highest debt-to-GDP ratio at 415 percent, Standard Chartered estimates.
Economists are primarily concerned not that China has a high debt-to-GDP ratio but that China’s debt is rising so rapidly since financial turmoil usually follows such increases.
“Our analysis suggests that countries that see increases in debt-to-GDP of more than 30 percent in a decade — it’s often a warning sign,” said Mark Williams, Asia economist for Capital Economics. “China’s has grown 70 percent in five years.”
There’s been a slowdown in credit growth in the past few quarters, but debt is still expanding faster than GDP. In other words, risk is still building.
“What we need is for credit to be allocated more efficiently, to get a bigger economic bang for your buck,” Williams said. “Achieving that is not so easy.”
Chinese credit is predominately channeled through state-owned banks, and the companies first in line to receive the credit tend to be most connected to the government, or state-owned firms. Some of those firms backed by the state don’t generate profits.

Nếu người miền Bắc có kiểu hát ru con À ƠI mà nỗi buồn loang xa ra ngoài ngàn dặm, thì người phương Nam cũng có điệu hát ru ẦU Ơ đặc trưng, chuyên chở những câu ca dao mộc mạc, chân phương, lai láng tình người.
Trong số những bài ru của các bà mẹ, người chị miền Nam “VÍ DẦU CẦU VÁN ĐÓNG ĐINH” có thể xem như là một thí dụ tiêu biểu :

Mở đầu là một câu hát VÍ nhập đề ngẫu hứng bằng bốn chữ CẦU VÁN ĐÓNG ĐINH. Bốn chữ rất bình thường, rất đơn sơ, nêu bật hình ảnh chiếc cầu gỗ, được đóng bằng đinh ken vào nhau chắc chắn, một dạng cầu xem như … “kiên cố” thường thấy ở nông thôn thuở trước. Để rồi qua đó dẫn thẳng vào câu hai, một câu TỶ : đối chiếu, so sánh lập tức với chiếc CẦU TRE LẮT LẺO, GẬP GHỀNH một hình ảnh phổ quát ở miền quê phương Nam, tương phản hoàn toàn với chiếc cầu ván đóng đinh chắc chắn.
Tại những con kênh, rạch, mương, ngòi nhỏ người ta thường nối liền đôi bờ bằng cách bắc những chiếc cầu DỪA và nhất là cầu TRE, hai trong số những loại cây sống và phát triển rất mạnh mẽ ở nông thôn. Một chiếc cầu tre có thể gồm nhiều NHỊP, mỗi nhịp chỉ là một thân tre bắc nằm ngang, gác lên MỐ CẦU. Mố cầu gồm hai thanh tre cắm xuống lòng kênh rạch, bắt chéo nhau thành hình chữ X, được buộc lại chặt chẽ bằng dây lạt dừa hoặc … dây chuối. Cầu tre có thể có tay vịn giúp cho trẻ nhỏ và người già đi qua an toàn, nhưng cũng có thể không có tay vịn, khiến cho người ta mỗi khi qua cầu đều phải trổ thuật giữ thăng bằng của người … làm xiếc, bằng cách dang rộng hai tay và đi chân không … chạy ù qua cầu , càng nhanh thì càng dễ giữ được thăng bằng . Người nhát gan, qua cầu theo kiểu … “cà mà cập mập” rất dễ bị rơi tõm xuống nước ! Dân thành phố đứng trước loại cầu này kể như … không rét mà run ! (Bản thân tôi khi mới “đương đầu” với những chiếc cầu tre, thường là phải thốt lời tỉ tê dịu ngọt :-“Dzắt anh wa dzí !” )
Đơn sơ như thế, tầm thường như thế nhưng chính chiếc cầu tre lại trở thành tiêu biểu, đặc trưng, trở thành hồn quê, hồn nước như chiếc nón lá, chiếc áo dài Việt Nam vậy. Người đi xa quê hương thoáng nhớ đến hình ảnh chiếc cầu tre không thể nào tránh khỏi lưu luyến, bùi ngùi.
Hậu quả của tính chất lắt lẻo, gập ghềnh của cầu tre là KHÓ ĐI. Từ hai chữ “Khó đi” ấy, lời ru dẫn nhập vào câu ba bằng cách lặp lại và khẳng định : “KHÓ ĐI, MẸ DẮT CON ĐI” nêu bật tình mẫu tử bao la, việc khó nào mẹ cũng gánh vác, đỡ đần cho con, đặc biệt khi ta còn thơ ấu, việc nào cũng khó, khó nào cũng phải nương cậy vào nơi mẹ cả.
Tứ thơ đột ngột chuyển sang phần kết thúc bằng câu bát : “CON ĐI TRƯỜNG HỌC, MẸ ĐI TRƯỜNG ĐỜI” với hình thức Mỹ từ pháp Tiểu đồng dạng “Con đi …, mẹ đi …”, đậm đà chất thơ. Đồng dạng vì cả con lẫn mẹ đều gặp khó, đều phải đối diện cùng những chiếc cầu tre lắt lẻo, gập ghềnh vô hình trong cuộc đời. Đồng dạng nhưng dị biệt vì mức độ khó khăn của mẹ trong trường đời khó khăn hơn cái khó của con trong trường học nhiều. Hơn nữa, con khó còn có mẹ giúp (Khó đi, mẹ dắt con đi), ngược lại, khi mẹ gặp khó thì chẳng có ai giúp cả, giữa gió mưa giông tố của đời, mẹ phải cắn răng độc lập xoay sở lấy một mình

in the study of tragedy/comedy {The Birth of Tragedy from the Spirit of Music (German: Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geiste der Musik) is an 1872 work of dramatic theory by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It was reissued in 1886 as The Birth of Tragedy, Or: Hellenism and Pessimism (Die Geburt der Tragödie, Oder: Griechentum und Pessimismus). The later edition contained a prefatory essay, An Attempt at Self-Criticism, wherein Nietzsche commented on this earliest book.
Nietzsche found in classical Athenian tragedy an art form that transcended the pessimism and nihilism of a fundamentally meaningless world. The Greek spectators, by looking into the abyss of human suffering and affirming it, passionately and joyously affirmed the meaning of their own existence. They knew themselves to be infinitely more than petty individuals, finding self-affirmation not in another life, not in a world to come, but in the terror and ecstasy alike celebrated in the performance of tragedies.
Originally educated as a philologist, Nietzsche discusses the history of the tragic form and introduces an intellectual dichotomy between the Dionysian and the Apollonian (very loosely: reality as disordered and undifferentiated by forms versus reality as ordered and differentiated by forms).

Daphnis and Chloe is the story of a boy (Daphnis) and a girl (Chloe), each of whom is exposed at birth along with some identifying tokens. A goatherd named Lamon discovers Daphnis, and a shepherd called Dryas finds Chloe. Each decides to raise the child he finds as his own. Daphnis and Chloe grow up together, herding the flocks for their foster parents. They fall in love but, being naive, do not understand what is happening to them. Philetas, a wise old cowherd, explains to them what love is and tells them that the only cure is kissing[2] They do this. Eventually, Lycaenion, a woman from the city, educates Daphnis in love-making. Daphnis, however, decides not to test his newly acquired [talent] on Chloe, because Lycaenion tells Daphnis that Chloe “will scream and cry and lie bleeding heavily [as if murdered].”[2] Throughout the book, Chloe is courted by suitors, two of whom (Dorcon and Lampis) attempt with varying degrees of success to abduct her. She is also carried off by raiders from a nearby city and saved by the intervention of the god Pan. Meanwhile, Daphnis falls into a pit, gets beaten up, is abducted by pirates, and is very nearly raped. Nietzsche claims life always involves a struggle between these two elements, each battling for control over the existence of humanity. In Nietzsche’s words, “Wherever the Dionysian prevailed, the Apollonian was checked and destroyed…. wherever the first Dionysian onslaught was successfully withstood, the authority and majesty of the Delphic god Apollo exhibited itself as more rigid and menacing than ever.” Yet neither side ever prevails due to each containing the other in an eternal, natural check, or balance.
Nietzsche argues that the tragedy of Ancient Greece was the highest form of art due to its mixture of both Apollonian and Dionysian elements into one seamless whole, allowing the spectator to experience the full spectrum of the human condition. The Dionysian element was to be found in the music of the chorus, while the Apollonian element was found in the dialogue which gave a concrete symbolism that balanced the Dionysiac revelry. Basically, the Apollonian spirit was able to give form to the abstract Dionysian.
Before the tragedy, there was an era of static, idealized plastic art in the form of sculpture that represented the Apollonian view of the world. The Dionysian element was to be found in the wild revelry of festivals and drunkenness, but, most importantly, in music. The combination of these elements in one art form gave birth to tragedy. He theorizes that the chorus was originally always satyrs, goat-men. (This is speculative, although the word “tragedy” τραγωδία is contracted from trag(o)-aoidiā = “goat song” from tragos = “goat” and aeidein = “to sing”.) Thus, he argues, “the illusion of culture was wiped away by the primordial image of man” for the audience; they participated with and as the chorus empathetically, “so that they imagined themselves as restored natural geniuses, as satyrs.” But in this state, they have an Apollonian dream vision of themselves, of the energy they’re embodying. It’s a vision of the god, of Dionysus, who appears before the chorus on the stage. And the actors and the plot are the development of that dream vision, the essence of which is the ecstatic dismembering of the god and of the Bacchantes’ rituals, of the inseparable ecstasy and suffering of human existence.
After the time of Aeschylus and Sophocles, there was an age where tragedy died. Nietzsche ties this to the influence of writers like Euripides and the coming of rationality, represented by Socrates. Euripides reduced the use of the chorus and was more naturalistic in his representation of human drama, making it more reflective of the realities of daily life. Socrates emphasized reason to such a degree that he diffused the value of myth and suffering to human knowledge. For Nietzsche, these two intellectuals helped drain the ability of the individual to participate in forms of art, because they saw things too soberly and rationally. The participation mystique aspect of art and myth was lost, and along with it, much of man’s ability to live creatively in optimistic harmony with the sufferings of life. Nietzsche concludes that it may be possible to reattain the balance of Dionysian and Apollonian in modern art through the operas of Richard Wagner, in a rebirth of tragedy.
In contrast to the typical Enlightenment view of ancient Greek culture as noble, simple, elegant and grandiose, Nietzsche believed the Greeks were grappling with pessimism. The universe in which we live is the product of great interacting forces; but we neither observe nor know these as such. What we put together as our conceptions of the world, Nietzsche thought, never actually addresses the underlying realities. It is human destiny to be controlled by the darkest universal realities and, at the same time, to live life in a human-dreamt world of illusions.
The issue, then, or so Nietzsche thought, is how to experience and understand the Dionysian side of life without destroying the obvious values of the Apollonian side. It is not healthy for an individual, or for a whole society, to become entirely absorbed in the rule of one or the other. The soundest (healthiest) foothold is in both. Nietzsche’s theory of Athenian tragic drama suggests exactly how, before Euripides and Socrates, the Dionysian and Apollonian elements of life were artistically woven together. The Greek spectator became healthy through direct experience of the Dionysian within the protective spirit-of-tragedy on the Apollonian stage.

In Zoroastrian tradition, the “chaotic” is represented by Angra Mainyu (also referred to as “Ahriman”), the “Destructive Principle”, while the benevolent is represented through Ahura Mazda’s Spenta Mainyu, the instrument or “Bounteous Principle” of the act of creation. It is through Spenta Mainyu that transcendental Ahura Mazda is immanent in humankind, and through which the Creator interacts with the world. Things being investigated, knowledge became complete. Their knowledge being complete, their thoughts were sincere. Their thoughts being sincere, their hearts were then rectified. Their hearts being rectified, their persons were cultivated. Their persons being cultivated, their families were regulated. Their families being regulated, their states were rightly governed. Their states being rightly governed, the whole kingdom was made tranquil and happy.
From the Son of Heaven down to the mass of the people, all must consider the cultivation of the person the root of everything besides.
It cannot be, when the root is neglected, that what should spring from it will be well ordered. It never has been the case that what was of great importance has been slightly cared for, and, at the same time, that what was of slight importance has been greatly cared for.

NARRATOR 1: Dighavu sang, and the king’s heart was gladdened. Then Brahmadatta told him,

Iconographic depictions[edit]
Feathered Serpent head at the Ciudadela complex in Teotihuacan
The earliest iconographic depiction of the deity is believed to be found on Stela 19 at the Olmec site of La Venta, depicting a serpent rising up behind a person probably engaged in a shamanic ritual. This depiction is believed to have been made around 900 BC. Although probably not exactly a depiction of the same feathered serpent deity worshipped in classic and post-classic periods, it shows the continuity of symbolism of feathered snakes in Mesoamerica from the formative period and on, for example in comparison to the Mayan Vision Serpent shown below.

The first culture to use the symbol of a feathered serpent as an important religious and political symbol was Teotihuacan. At temples such as the aptly named “Quetzalcoatl temple” in the Ciudadela complex, feathered serpents figure prominently and alternate with a different kind of serpent head. The earliest depictions of the feathered serpent deity were fully zoomorphic, depicting the serpent as an actual snake, but already among the Classic Maya the deity began acquiring human features.
In the iconography of the classic period Maya serpent imagery is also prevalent: a snake is often seen as the embodiment of the sky itself, and a vision serpent is a shamanic helper presenting Maya kings with visions of the underworld.
The archaeological record shows that after the fall of Teotihuacan that marked the beginning of the epi-classic period in Mesoamerican chronology around 600 AD, the cult of the feathered serpent spread to the new religious and political centers in central Mexico, centers such as Xochicalco, Cacaxtla and Cholula.[3] Feathered serpent iconography is prominent at all of these sites. Cholula is known to have remained the most important center of worship to Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec/Nahua version of the feathered serpent deity, in the post-classic period.
During the epi-classic period, a dramatic spread of feathered serpent iconography is evidenced throughout Mesoamerica, and during this period begins to figure prominently at cites such as Chichén Itzá, El Tajín, and throughout the Maya area. Colonial documentary sources from the Maya area frequently speak of the arrival of foreigners from the central Mexican plateau, often led by a man whose name translates as “Feathered Serpent”; it has been suggested that these stories recall the spread of the feathered serpent cult in the epi-classic and early post-classic periods.[3]
In the post-classic Nahua civilization of central Mexico (Aztec), the worship of Quetzalcoatl was ubiquitous. The most important center was Cholula where the world’s largest pyramid was dedicated to his worship. In Aztec culture, depictions of Quetzalcoatl were fully anthropomorphic. Quetzalcoatl was associated with the windgod Ehecatl and is often depicted with his insignia: a beak-like mask.

To the Aztecs, Quetzalcoatl was, as his name indicates, a feathered serpent, a flying reptile (much like a dragon), who was a boundary-maker (and transgressor) between earth and sky. He was a creator deity having contributed essentially to the creation of Mankind. He also had anthropomorphic forms, for example in his aspects as Ehecatl the wind god. Among the Aztecs, the name Quetzalcoatl was also a priestly title, as the two most important priests of the Aztec Templo Mayor were called “Quetzalcoatl Tlamacazqui”. In the Aztec ritual calendar, different deities were associated with the cycle-of-year names: Quetzalcoatl was tied to the year Ce Acatl (One Reed), which correlates to the year
Since the sixteenth century, it has been widely held that the Aztec Emperor Moctezuma II initially believed the landing of Hernán Cortés in 1519 to be Quetzalcoatl’s return. This view has been questioned by ethno-historians who argue that the Quetzalcoatl-Cortés connection is not found in any document that was created independently of post-Conquest Spanish influence, and that there is little proof of a pre-Hispanic belief in Quetzalcoatl’s return.[24][25][26][27][28] Most documents expounding this theory are of entirely Spanish origin, such as Cortés’s letters to Charles V of Spain, in which Cortés goes to great pains to present the naive gullibility of the Aztecs in general as a great aid in his conquest of Mexico.
Much of the idea of Cortés’ being seen as a deity can be traced back to the Florentine Codex written down some 50 years after the conquest. In the Codex’s description of the first meeting between Moctezuma and Cortés, the Aztec ruler is described as giving a prepared speech in classical oratorial Nahuatl, a speech which, as described in the codex written by the Franciscan Bernardino de Sahagún and his Tlatelolcan informants, included such prostrate declarations of divine or near-divine admiration as:
You have graciously come on earth, you have graciously approached your water, your high place of Mexico, you have come down to your mat, your throne, which I have briefly kept for you, I who used to keep it for you.
and:
You have graciously arrived, you have known pain, you have known weariness, now come on earth, take your rest, enter into your palace, rest your limbs; may our lords come on earth.
Subtleties in, and an imperfect scholarly understanding of, high Nahuatl rhetorical style make the exact intent of these comments tricky to ascertain, but Restall argues that Moctezuma’s politely offering his throne to Cortés (if indeed he did ever give the speech as reported) may well have been meant as the exact opposite of what it was taken to mean: politeness in Aztec culture was a way to assert dominance and show superiority. This speech, which has been widely referred to, has been a factor in the widespread belief that Moctezuma was addressing Cortés as the returning god Quetzalcoatl.
The Feathered Serpent deity was important in art and religion in most of Mesoamerica for close to 2,000 years, from the Pre-Classic era until the Spanish conquest. Civilizations worshiping the Feathered Serpent included the Mixtec, Toltec, Aztec, who adopted it from the people of Teotihuacan, and the Maya.
The cult of the serpent in Mesoamerica is very old; there are representations of snakes with bird-like characteristics as old as the Olmec preclassic (1150-500 BC). The snake represents the earth and vegetation, but it was in Teotihuacan (around 150 BC) where the snake got the precious feathers of the quetzal, as seen in the Murals of the city. The most elaborate representations come from the old Quetzalcoatl Temple around 200 BC, which shows a rattlesnake with the long green feathers of the quetzal.
The tradition of Quetzalcoatl originated in Central America near the time of Christ’s crucifixion. Various written accounts establish the following beliefs regarding Quetzalcoatl that were prevalent in Mesoamerica during the sixteenth century—
• He was born of a virgin.
• He was associated with a new star.
• He performed miracles.
• He taught the practice of baptism.
• He was associated with the cross.
• He was a symbol of death and resurrection.
• He sent disciples to preach His word.
• He prophesied of future events.
• He promised He would come a second time.
• He was the Creator of all things.
• He caused a great destruction in Central America circa 34 A.D.
• His children will become lords and heirs of the earth.

How can I know for sure that it’s thrush?
If you think your baby has thrush, look for the characteristic white patches. Then gently touch a patch with a gauze-covered finger. If it is thrush, it probably won’t come off very easily, but if it does, you’ll find a raw, red area underneath that may bleed.
If you notice a white coating on your baby’s tongue but nowhere else, it’s probably just milk residue (especially if you can wipe it off). Thrush patches can appear on your baby’s tongue, but are most often found on the sides of the mouth. These spots can be painful — you may first suspect thrush if your baby starts crying when nursing or sucking on a pacifier or bottle.

The calendar is based on the Julian calendar except that the year started on 1 September and the year number used an Anno Mundi epoch derived from the Septuagint version of the Bible. It placed the date of creation at 5509 years before the Incarnation, and was characterized by a certain tendency which had already been a tradition amongst Jews and early Christians to number the years from the foundation of the world. (Latin: ‘Annus Mundi’ or ‘Ab Origine Mundi’— AM).[note 2] Its year one, the supposed date of creation, was September 1, 5509 BC to August 31, 5508 BC.

The Buddhist Era was first introduced to Southeast Asia along with Buddhism in the early centuries CE. It was not a separate calendar but simply a year numbering system that employed the organization and calculation methods of the prevailing lunisolar calendars in use throughout the region. In the early centuries CE, the reference civil calendar of the Buddhist calendar prevalent in Southeast Asia was the Mahāsakaraj Era, which is said to have been adopted by the Pyu state of Sri Ksetra in 80 CE. The Mahāsakaraj Era was gradually replaced by the Burmese Era or Culāsakaraj, first in Myanmar in 640 CE,[17] and in other Theravada kingdoms of Southeast Asia between the 13th and 16th centuries.[note 3] Theravada Buddhist tradition also recognizes pre-Buddhist Anjana Sakaraj (Añjana’s Era) since the events of the Buddha’s life are recorded in that era.[3]

The tradition of using different reference calendars continued in Siam in 1912 when King Vajiravudh decreed that the Buddhist Era would now track the Thai solar calendar, the Siamese version of the Gregorian calendar with the New Year’s Day of 1 April. Therefore the Thai Buddhist Era year of 2455 began on 1 April 1912 (as opposed to 15 April 1912 according to the lunisolar calendar[18]). The Thai Buddhist Era was further realigned to the Gregorian calendar on 6 September 1940 when Prime Minister Phibunsongkhram decreed 1 January 1941 as the start of the year 2484 BE. As a result, the Year 2483 was only 9 months long, and the Thai Buddhist Era equals that of the Common Era plus 543 years.

The lunisolar calendar is used to mark important Buddhist holidays. Many of the holidays are celebrated as public holidays.

But, the Gregorian calendar wasn’t completely official until 1929 for incessant fighting between warlords. The People’s Republic of China adopt the Gregorian calendar include year number since 1949.
The Han calendar remains culturally essential today. For example, most of the traditional festivals, such as Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival, occur on new moons or full moons. The Han calendar, as an element of traditional culture, has much cultural and nationalistic sentiment invested in it. The Han calendar is still used in the more traditional Chinese households around the world to pick ‘auspicious dates’ for important events such as weddings, funerals, and business deals. A special calendar is used for this purpose, called the Imperial Calendar(traditional Chinese: 皇曆; simplified Chinese: 皇历; pinyin: huánglì), which contains auspicious activities, times, and directions for each day. The calendar follows the Gregorian dates but has the corresponding Chinese dates. Every date would have a comprehensive listing of astrological measurements and fortune elements.

There’s a epoch for each version of Han Calendar, which is called as Lìyuán(traditional Chinese: 曆元; simplified Chinese: 历元). The epoch is optimal origin of the calendar, and it’s a Jiǎzǐrì, the first day of a lunar month, and the dark moon and solstice is just at the mid-night(Chinese: 日得甲子夜半朔旦冬至). And tracing back to a perfect day, such as that the day with magical star sign, there’s a supreme epoch(Chinese: 上元; pinyin: shàngyuán). The continuous year base on the supreme epoch is shàngyuán jīnián(traditional Chinese: 上元積年; simplified Chinese: 上元积年). More and more factors was added into the supreme epoch, and the shàngyuán jīnián became a huge number. So, the supreme epoch and shàngyuán jīnián was neglected from Shòushí calendar.
All Han calendar follows the frame of Tàichū calendar. The calendric epoch, the winter solstice of 105BC, may be regarded as the epoch of Han calendar. And it’s clear that it will be a neutral epoch.

In the 17th century, the Jesuits tried to determine what year should be considered the epoch of Han calendar. In his Sinicae historiae decas prima (first published in Munich in 1658), Martino Martini (1614–1661) dated the royal ascension of Huangdi to 2697 BC, but started the Chinese calendar with the reign of Fu Xi, which he claimed started in 2952 BC. Philippe Couplet’s (1623–1693) Chronological table of Chinese monarchs (Tabula chronologica monarchiae sinicae; 1686) also gave the same date for the Yellow Emperor. The Jesuits’ dates provoked great interest in Europe, where they were used for comparisons with Biblical chronology. Modern Chinese chronology has generally accepted Martini’s dates, except that it usually places the reign of Huangdi in 2698 BC and omits Huangdi’s predecessors Fu Xi and Shennong, who are considered “too legendary to include”.
Starting in 1903, radical publications started using the projected date of birth of the Yellow Emperor as the first year of Han calendar. Different newspapers and magazines proposed different dates. Jiangsu, for example, counted 1905 as year 4396 (use an epoch of 2491 BC), whereas the Minbao (traditional Chinese: 明報; simplified Chinese: 明报, the organ of the Tongmenghui) reckoned 1905 as 4603 (use an epoch of 2698 BC). Liu Shipei (劉師培; 1884–1919) created the Yellow Emperor Calendar, now often used to calculate the date, to show the unbroken continuity of the Han race and Han culture from earliest times. Liu’s calendar started with the birth of the Yellow Emperor, which he determined to be 2711 BC. There is no evidence that this calendar was used before the 20th century.[9] Liu calculated that the 1900 international expedition sent by eight foreign powers to suppress the Boxer Uprising entered Beijing in the 4611th year of the Yellow Emperor.
At January 2, 1912, Sun Yat-sen declared that the Republic of China adopt the Gregorian calendar, and establish Shíyīyuè 13th 4609 of Huángdì Era as the new year’s day of the first year of the Republic of China (traditional Chinese: 中華民國改用陽曆,以黄帝紀元四千六百零九年十一月十三日爲中華民國元年元旦; simplified Chinese: 中华民国改用阳历,以黄帝纪元四千六百零九年十一月十三日为中华民国元年元旦). Sun Yat-sen’s choice, which implied an epoch of 2698 BC, was adopted by many overseas Chinese communities outside Southeast Asia such as San Francisco’s Chinatown.[10]

The tale is told by Ivan with brief interruptive questions by Alyosha. In the tale, Christ comes back to Earth in Seville at the time of the Inquisition. He performs a number of miracles (echoing miracles from the Gospels). The people recognize him and adore him, but he is arrested by Inquisition leaders and sentenced to be burnt to death the next day. The Grand Inquisitor visits him in his cell to tell him that the Church no longer needs him. The main portion of the text is devoted to the Inquisitor explaining to Jesus why his return would interfere with the mission of the Church.
The Inquisitor frames his denunciation of Jesus around the three questions that Satan asked Jesus during the temptation of Christ in the desert. These three are the temptation to turn stones into bread, the temptation to cast Himself from the Temple and be saved by the angels, and the temptation to rule over all the kingdoms of the world. The Inquisitor states that Jesus rejected these three temptations in favor of freedom, but the Inquisitor thinks that Jesus has misjudged human nature. He does not believe that the vast majority of humanity can handle the freedom which Jesus has given them. The Inquisitor thus implies that Jesus, in giving humans freedom to choose, has excluded the majority of humanity from redemption and doomed it to suffer.
Despite declaring the Inquisitor to be an atheist, Ivan also has the Inquisitor saying that the Catholic Church follows “the wise spirit, the dread spirit of death and destruction”, i.e., Satan. He says: “We are not with Thee, but with him, and that is our secret! For centuries have we abandoned Thee to follow him”. For he, through compulsion, provided the tools to end all human suffering and for humanity to unite under the banner of the Church. The multitude then is guided through the Church by the few who are strong enough to take on the burden of freedom. The Inquisitor says that under him, all mankind will live and die happily in ignorance. Though he leads them only to “death and destruction”, they will be happy along the way. The Inquisitor will be a self-martyr, spending his life to keep choice from humanity. He states that “anyone who can appease a man’s conscience can take his freedom away from him”.
The Inquisitor advances this argument by explaining why Christ was wrong to reject each temptation by Satan. Christ should have turned stones into bread, as men will always follow those who will feed their bellies. The Inquisitor recalls how Christ rejected this, saying “man cannot live on bread alone”, and explains to Christ: “Feed men, and then ask of them virtue! That’s what they’ll write on the banner they’ll raise against Thee and with which they will destroy Thy temple. Where Thy temple stood will rise a new building; the terrible tower of Babel will be built again, and though, like the one of old, it will not be finished”. Casting himself down from the temple to be caught by angels would cement his godhood in the minds of people, who would follow him forever. Ruling over all the kingdoms of the Earth would ensure their salvation, the Grand Inquisitor claims.

The Cao Đài Religion’s (or Caodaism’s) official name is Đại Đạo Tam Kỳ Phổ Độ. Translated directly it means: The Third Great Universal Religious Amnesty. (Đại Đạo – “Great Faith”, Tam Kỳ – “Third Period”, Phổ -“to announce” and Độ – “to save”). It will be a period of intense religious activity that will see God and Humanity united in ways not yet imagined. The Third Amnesty establishes a new Great Faith for salvation of living beings before the universal destruction. The primary objective of the Third Amnesty is the unity of all religions, which will bring mankind together in a universal family for universal peace.[11]
Throughout human history, God the Father has revealed His Truth many times. His Divine Messages have been translated through the mouths of many great prophets, but always these messages were either ignored or forgotten due to human’s susceptibility to secular desires. The Age has now come where He speaks to humanity directly.
The previous two Religious Amnesties saw the rise of Hinduism, Judaism, Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, Islam, etc. Caodaism as the embodiment of The Third Amnesty comes to unite the traditions of these Two Periods. It does so guided directly by Đức Cao Đài (God the Father) and the Divine Beings.

In the nineteenth century Spiritism re-awoke the religious life of Europe. Great souls such as Madam Blavatsky, Alan Kardec and Victor Hugo opened new vistas of religious possibility. In Vietnam the age-old traditions of Asian divination and Taoist mediumship began to mix with the new traditions of European Spiritism. This meeting of Eastern and Western traditions caused an evolutionary leap in humanity’s spiritual quest. Thus a strong communication link was established between Heaven and Earth. It was through this special link that God granted His Third Amnesty directly. Though it was announced to the humble and grateful nation of Vietnam, The Third Amnesty is a gift to all.
Emphasising this objective of unity, inside every Cao Đài Temple, is a representation of the Divine Contract of The Third Amnesty (The Third Alliance). This contract between Heaven and Earth is written and presented to humanity by the Venerable Saints, Victor Hugo, Sun Yat Sen and Trạng Trình Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm. Their mission is to guide humanity into the way of the Third Amnesty. The contract is written in French: Dieu et Humanité Amour et Justice; and in Chinese: Tian Shang Tian Xia Bo Ai Gong Ping. This translates into English as: “God and Humanity [for] Love and Justice.”[11]
As mentioned in the Bible, Maitreya Bodhisattva will be enthroned the next Pope of Cao Đài, after He reaches enlightenment to become a Buddha[citation needed]. Maitreya Buddha together with His newly select congregation will fulfill the mission of uniting the world religions. Then, He will hold the Dragon Flower Festival where faithful souls are evaluated for the ranks of Angels, Saints, Immortals an Buddhas based on their virtues, and good deeds.
The doctrines of the Cao Đài faith tends not only to reconcile all religious views, but also to adapt itself to all degrees of spiritual evolution. A basic principle of Caodaism is “All Religions are One”.
1.From a moral point of view, Cao Đài Religion reminds people of their duties towards themselves, their family, their society (a broader family), then toward humanity (the universal family).
2.From a philosophical point of view, Cao Đài Religion preaches renunciation of honors, riches and luxury, in other words, deliverance from servitude to materialism in the attainment of full spiritual quietude of soul.
3.From the point of view of worship, Cao Đài Religion prescribes the adoration of God, the veneration of Divine Beings and the worship of ancestors.
4.From a spiritual point of view, Cao Đài Religion confirms, in harmony with other religions, the existence of the spirits and the soul, their survival beyond the physical body, and their evolution by successive reincarnations, according to the Karmic Law.
5.From the initiates’ point of view, Cao Đài Religion communicates to worthy adherents and reveals teachings that enable them, by a process of spiritual evolution, to reach the ecstasies of happiness
