Gaza City (CNN) — Hundreds of Palestinians fled in panic into Gaza City on Sunday as Israeli troops focused their firepower on the nearby town of Shaja’ia. The shelling and bombing killed at least 40 people, a Gaza hospital spokesman said.
The assault wounded 300 people, Gaza health ministry spokesman Dr. Ashraf al-Qedra said.
Some residents said they had received warnings from Israel in previous days saying they should flee, but the residents said they felt it was futile, and that they could face the same dangers in other parts of Gaza.
Overnight, Hamas’ military wing also fired rockets from Shaja’ia toward Israel. The militant group also turned down an invitation by Egypt to talk about a cease-fire initiative the country had proposed.

Chariots of Fire is a 1981 British historical drama film. It tells the fact-based story of two athletes in the 1924 Olympics: Eric Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian who runs for the glory of God, and Harold Abrahams, an English Jew who runs to overcome prejudice.
The film was conceived and produced by David Puttnam, written by Colin Welland, and directed by Hugh Hudson. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won four, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay. It is ranked 19th in the British Film Institute’s list of Top 100 British films. Abrahams is badly beaten by the heavily favoured United States runners in the 200 metre race. He knows his last chance for a medal will be the 100 metres. He competes in the race, and wins. His coach Sam Mussabini is overcome that the years of dedication and training have paid off with an Olympic gold medal. Now Abrahams can get on with his life and reunite with his girlfriend Sybil, whom he had neglected for the sake of running. Before Liddell’s race, the American coach remarks dismissively to his runners that Liddell has little chance of doing well in his now far longer 400 metre race. But one of the American runners, Jackson Scholz, hands Liddell a note of support for his convictions. Liddell defeats the American favourites and wins the gold medal.
The British team returns home triumphant. As the film ends, onscreen text explains that Abrahams married Sybil, and became the elder statesman of British athletics. Liddell went on to missionary work in China. All of Scotland mourned his death in 1945 in Japanese-occupied China.

The phrase “a thousand points of light” was popularized by US president George H. W. Bush, and later formed the name of a private, non-profit organization launched by Bush to support volunteerism.[1]

The term was used by George Bush in his speech accepting the presidential nomination at the 1988 Republican National Convention in New Orleans. Written for Bush by Peggy Noonan and Craig R. Smith, the address likened America’s clubs and volunteer organizations to “a brilliant diversity spread like stars, like a thousand points of light in a broad and peaceful sky.”[2] Bush reprised the phrase near the end of his speech, affirming that he would “keep America moving forward, always forward—for a better America, for an endless enduring dream and a thousand points of light.”[2]

The phrase was previously found in C.S. Lewis’s 1955 novel The Magician’s Nephew, in which Lewis wrote: “One moment there had been nothing but darkness; next moment a thousand, thousand points of light leaped out.” In 1917 H.G. Wells three times states in Mr. Britling Sees It Through variations of: “But never was the black fabric of war so threadbare. At a thousand points, the light is shining through.”

I have always loved this film, but was sure that it wouldn’t quite register with modern day teens in the same way because there is such a different attitude now towards sex and relationships. I was teaching a course in critical viewing of film and wanted to show it as a bridge between movies made under the old production code and movies of today. As we watched it, an amazing thing happened. We realized that the movie reflected a disintegration of marriage that would predict times to come and had lots of relevance in terms of what could happen to kids from broken homes. The romance between Dee and Donahue was easy for the kids to understand, but they also related in part to the older lovers, mostly because the depiction of the marriages was so detailed. I mean, who would want to stay with Ford and Kennedy? Watching the film with them, I could see so much more–exactly why this film was so condemned at the time by the Catholic Legion of Decency for its sympathetic treatment of adultery and premarital sex. It turned out to be a great choice for my course and one that I will definitely use again. Why isn’t it on DVD and what a shame that all the principles are gone since a commentary from them would have been so wonderful. For all everyone says about Sandra Dee, I don’t know many 17 year ODs who could have turned in that kind of high intensity performance. She was an actress with hidden depths who was unfortunately typecast. Never tire of this film and the song is stunning even today!

Dạ oanh là một loài chim di trú, sinh sống tại các rừng mưa và bụi rậm ở châu Âu và Tây Nam châu Á, tuy nhiên không được tìm thấy trong môi trường tự nhiên ở châu Mỹ. Trong thời gian gần đây, phân bố và quần thể dạ oanh đang có xu hướng suy giảm nghiêm trọng, như ở Anh số lượng loài chim này đã sụt 57 phần trăm trong giai đoạn 1995-2009[13], và theo một phát ngôn viên của Hội Ủy thác điểu cầm học Anh quốc (British Trust for Ornithology) thì trên nước Anh chỉ còn khoảng 6.000 con chim trống[14]. Nguyên nhân chính là do môi trường sống của chúng càng ngày càng bị thu hẹp, ví dụ như các loài mang và hoẵng đã ăn mất nhiều cây bụi nơi chúng sống[16], hoặc do diện tích rừng thu hẹp bởi chính sách quản lý rừng, hoặc do mùa xuân trở nên lạnh và ẩm hơn[9].
Dạ oanh là biểu tượng quan trọng của thi ca trong nhiều thời kỳ khác nhau và mang nhiều ý nghĩa biểu tượng khác nhau. Trong tác phẩm Odýsseia, nhà thơ Homēros có nói đến chuyện thần thoại về Philomela bị biến thành chim dạ oanh[20]).[21] Chuyện thần thoại này chính là chủ đề của vở bi kịch Tereus của Sophokles, nay chỉ còn sót lại vài phần. Nhà thơ Ovidius cũng có nhắc đến câu chuyện này trong tập thơ “Biến hình” (Metamorphoses). Câu chuyện này về sau được cải biên bởi các nhà thơ như Chrétien de Troyes, Geoffrey Chaucer, John Gower và George Gascoigne. Tác phẩm “The Waste Land” của T.S. This proverb has come down in many variations over the centuries (see historical references below). It describes a situation in which a failure to anticipate or correct some initially small dysfunction leads by successively more critical stages to an egregious outcome. The rhyme thereby relates a conjectural example of the “butterfly effect”, an effect studied in chaos theory, involving sensitive dependence on small differences in initial conditions. The rhyme’s implied small difference in initial conditions is the lack of a spare horseshoe nail, relative to a condition of its availability.[1] At a more literal level, it expresses the importance of military logistics in warfare.

Florence Nightingale

In 1840, Florence Nightingale begged her parents “to let her study mathematics instead of doing worsted work and practicing quadrilles.” Her mother “did not approve, home duties were not to be neglected for mathematics.” She assumed that her daughter’s destiny was marriage, “and what use were mathematics to a married woman?” Her father, who loved math and had communicated that love to his daughter, nevertheless urged her to study more appropriate subjects (for a woman), “history or philosophy, natural or moral.” Florence expressed her preference for mathematics by saying, “I don’t think I shall succeed so well in anything that requires quickness as in what requires only work.” [1] Her parents finally granted permission. Years later, her mathematical approach saved the British army at Scutari during the Crimean war and provided the data that led to hospital reforms. [2]
Only after long emotional battles was Florence permitted to have tutors in mathematics. (One of her tutors was J.J. Sylvester.) She learned arithmetic, geometry, algebra, and before her involvement with nursing, spent her time tutoring children in these subjects. In the British Museum, one can read lesson plans in her handwriting (including story problems based on the lives of the children she was tutoring) for teaching arithmetic and geometry. She includes reminders to tell pupil teachers “to write notes of all the lessons they will give through the next week-they must never give them unprepared-of what they will say…tell them you prepare yourself.” [3]
Her lesson plans show concern about the education of girls. “Girls’ arithmetic has been neglected-their geography should be made arithmetical.” She made notes to ask such questions as:
How high is the reindeer? Are you as high? How high are you? 3 feet-how much is that? a yard-are you a quadruped? How far is the topmost point of Europe from the Equator? How far do you come to school? Two miles-now, if you were to walk two geographical miles a day, how long should you be walking to the equator? [4]
Clearly, she espoused teaching by questioning. In later years, when she wrote on nursing, she expressed the hope that the memory of Socrates would help her with the art of questioning, so that “those who read may learn not of me but of themselves.”
Florence Nightingale’s interest in mathematics extended beyond the subject matter itself, as shown in letters to her sweetheart during 1846. For example, in May she wrote, “There is a most lovely character given of D’Alembert’s the great mathematician’s lightheartedness… It says that it is the exclusive privilege of the exact science, to enjoy everyday some new truth which comes to reward one’s work.” Again, in August: “The loss of power of the high priest…the inconsiderate ‘following of the leader’ of the people, are everyday feelings in our hearts, just as is the jealousy, which brought under a different system of police, Abel to the grave.” Her letters show her sense of humor. In September after attending a political speech, she wrote:
“I have invented a new system of Logarithms (finding the capacities of arithmetic not sufficiently extensive) to count the number of times ‘Imperial Majesty’ occurs in the speech….” [6]
Nightingale helped to promote what was then a revolutionary idea (and a religious one for her) that social phenomena could be objectively measured and subjected to mathematical analysis. Her work with medical statistics was so impressive that she was elected (in 1858) to membership in the Statistical Society of England. One of the pioneers in the graphic method of presentation of data, she invented colorful polar-area diagrams to dramatize medical data. [7] Although other methods of persuasion had failed, her statistical approach convinced military authorities, Parliament, and Queen Victoria to carry out her proposed hospital reforms.
During the American Civil War, Nightingale was a consultant on army health to the United States government.
She also responded to a British war office request for advice on army medical care in Canada. Her mathematical activities included ascertaining “the average speed of transport by sledge” and calculating “the time required to transport the sick over the immense distances of Canada.”
Florence Nightingale was a feminist, of course. It is amusing to see that she dedicated Introductory Notes on Lying in Institutions to the shade of Socrates’ mother. She fought for the privilege of studying math, for the right to be a nurse, and for every woman’s right “to bring the best that she has, whatever that is to the work of God’s world…to do the thing that is good, whether it is ‘suitable for a woman’ or not.” She cautioned against extremism, “which urges women to do all that men do…merely because men do it, and without regard to whether this is the best that women can do.” [5] She was a true mathematician in her love for reasoning, always questioning assumptions and taking great care in the process of reaching conclusions.

Thanks quí vị thửơng thức.mến chúc an vui hạnh phúc…Nhạc sĩ người Huế, sinh ngày 30 tháng 7 năm 1933 Cựu giáo sư Triết tại Sàigòn, trước 1975. Một vợ + 4 con. Hiện cư ngụ tại Montréal, từ 1980. Nhạc khí chuyên sử dụng : Dương cầm, Tây ban cầm và thổi saxo. Phạm Mạnh Cường khởi nghiệp bằng ca khúc Mái Trường Xưa, viết năm 1951.
Phạm Mạnh Cương sáng tác theo nguồn cảm hứng. Và nguồn hứng cảm này thường bắt nguồn từ một tình yêu, một kỷ niệm. Thói quen của ông là soạn nhạc trước viết lời sau. Nhạc của Phạm Mạnh Cường, đa số nội dung mang đậm nét tình yêu lứa đôi.
Nhạc phẩm Thương Hoài Ngàn Năm xuất hiện năm 1956, là nhạc phẩm đầu tiên ông viết tại miền Nam. Đây là một nhạc phẩm nói lên sự đa dạng về tiết tấu trong âm nhạc của Phạm Mạnh Cương, một nhạc sĩ phần lớn chỉ viết nhạc theo điệu Slow, Tango hoặc Boston. Ông cho biết đã lấy cảm hứng từ câu ca dao ” Tóc mai sợi vắn sợi dài, lấy nhau chẳng được thương hoài ngàn năm ” để sáng tác thành ca khúc này. Cũng theo ông, phía sau mỗi nhạc phẩm đều ghi dấu một kỷ niệm đã tạo nên nguồn cảm hứng; từ đó ông liên tiếp tung ra những ca khúc khác như Thung Lũng Hồng, Mắt Lệ Cho Người Tình (sáng tác tại Đà Lạt), Tóc Em Chưa Úa Nắng Hè (ra đời tại Nha Trang) và một vài nhạc phẩm ông gọi là “thuộc loại thời trang” như Loài Hoa Không Vỡ, Tình Yêu Đã Mất, vv… và tất cả đã trở thành những nhạc phẩm được nhiều người mến chuộng. Nhưng nhạc phẩm được ông ưa thích nhất là Thu Ca, cũng là một trong những bài tango hay của Việt Nam..
Ngoài việc sáng tác, Phạm Mạnh Cương còn làm báo (tập chí Thẫm Mỹ) và làm nhạc trưởng ban nhạc Phạm Mạnh Cương. Sau 40 năm sống trong âm nhạc với những thăng trầm, giờ đây Phạm Mạnh Cương, 65 tuổi, tác giả của khoảng 100 ca khúc, cho là một dịp để ông thực hiện một CD (do trung tâm Thúy Nga phát hành) và một tập nhạc gồm 20 nhạc phẩm chọn lọc của mình – dự trù phát hành trong năm 2001 này – gọi là một hình thức kỷ niệm và là một chứng tích về cuộc đời hoạt động của ông, và đó cũng được coi như là một đóng góp vào kho tàng âm nhạc Việt Nam.
Khởi đi từ những năm cuối thập niên 60 cho đến những ngày cuối cùng của miền Nam Việt Nam, những người yêu nhạc không mấy ai không biết đến một chương trình ca nhạc truyền hình và truyền thanh lấy tên của chính người nhạc sĩ thực hiện là Phạm Mạnh Cương. Chương trình Phạm Mạnh Cương với nữ xướng ngôn viên Như Hảo được coi là một trong những chương trình ca nhạc giá trị vào thời điểm vàng son của tân nhạc Việt Nam.
Thật ra ông đã sáng tác nhạc phẩm đầu tiên là Mái Trường Xưa từ năm 1951, được phổ biến mạnh tại Huế, nhưng đến năm 1953 ông mới bắt đầu được biết đến với nhạc phẩm Thu Ca viết tại Hà Nội. Ca khúc này đã được dùng làm nhạc hiệu cho những chương trình ca nhạc của ông… Tuy nhiên phải 6 năm sau, tên tuổi của Phạm Mạnh Cương mới thật sự chiếm được một chỗ đứng…Sau 5 năm sống trong sự xáo trộn và đổi thay của đất nước, Phạm Mạnh Cương cùng 2 con là Mạnh Quỳnh và Diễm Phúc từ Cà Mâu vượt biển rời Việt Nam vào năm 80, để Như Hảo và 2 người con khác ở lại. Sau khi ở tại trại tỵ nạn Leamsing ở Thái Lan vài tháng, ông cùng hai con được sang định cư tại Montreal theo diện nhân đạo vào tháng Sáu năm 80. Đáng lẽ nếu chờ đợi thêm, ba bố con ông đã được sang Mỹ do Hội Nghệ Sĩ Việt Nam tại đây bảo lãnh và mặc dù đã được Khánh Ly căn dặn “đừng đi đâu hết ngoài Mỹ”. Nhưng định mệnh đã đưa đẩy ông đến nới xứ lạnh này, và cuộc sống ông thật sự bước vào một khúc quanh mới.
